CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami began construction in May for the Ryder Center, the future home of Miami men’s and women’sbasketball and the University’s first large-capacity venue for othereducational, cultural, and community events. A groundbreaking ceremony willbe held at 3:30 p.m. on April 4, 2001 on the Coral Gables campus.

The $48 million facility, totally funded through private donations,is scheduled for completion for the 2002-2003 men’s and women’s basketballseasons. With seating for 7,000, the Ryder Center will provide theUniversity and the Coral Gables community with a facility designed for awide array of uses. The facility is conveniently located close to theUniversity Metrorail Station off Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

“The Ryder Center will not only enhance Hurricane Basketball,” saidUM’s Athletic Director Paul Dee, “but it will benefit the entire community.And, it is being built solely through private funds. We are extremelygrateful to the corporate leaders and individual donors who have made theRyder Center a reality.”

Dee said Ryder System, Inc. and the family of Dr. Edward Dauer, whodonated the lead gifts, provided the impetus for the 200,000 square footfacility. UM’s Ryder Center campaign began in 1995 with a $9 million giftfrom Ryder System, Inc. In 1998, UM received a $2 million gift for thefacility from Dr. and Mrs. Edward Dauer, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Dauer and theirlate mother, Reva Dauer.

“When completed, the Ryder Center will provide UM with a much neededfocal point for campus activities,” Dee said. The April 4 groundbreakingceremony will be held at the site of the Ryder Center off Dickinson Driveand Ponce de Leon Boulevard and across from the George A. Smathers WellnessCenter.
