Werner Hired To Tutor Hurricanes Quarterbacks

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Former Murray StateUniversity assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Dan Werner has beennamed quarterbacks coach at the University of Miami, Hurricanes headfootball coach Larry Coker announced today.
“Dan Werner has an impressive coaching background having worked with some ofthe most productive offenses in college football over the last few years andwe are thrilled to have him join our staff,” said Coker. “Everywhere he hascoached, Dan has enabled quarterbacks to reach their full potential, fromhis days as a young assistant here at UM to his most recent jobs at Auburnand Murray State.”
Werner, a former UM graduate assistant who also coached at a pair of Floridahigh schools during the 1980s, returns to Miami after spending the 2000season as offensive coordinator at Murray State. The 42-year-old St. Louis,Missouri, native built the MSU offense into one of the most potent on theNCAA Division I-AA level as the team ranked 11th nationally in totaloffense, averaging 452 yards per game, and 13th nationally in passingyardage averaging 276 yards per game.
Prior to his one season at Murray State, Werner was an assistant at AuburnUniversity during the 1999 season where he was offensive consultant to headcoach Tommy Tuberville. Before the job at Auburn, Werner was an assistantcoach at James Madison University for four seasons from 1995-98. He beganhis tenure at JMU as assistant head coach/quarterback coach/passing gamecoordinator in 1995. In 1997 he was promoted to offensivecoordinator/assistant head coach. From 1991-94 Werner coached at LouisianaTech where he was an assistant coach in charge of running backs and insidereceivers. In 1993 he was promoted to offensive coordinator/quarterbackcoach.
In the spring of 1990, Werner joined the coaching staff at the University ofNevada-Las Vegas. At UNLV, Werner was an assistant coach in charge ofquarterbacks. In the fall of 1990, Werner left the college game for oneseason to serve as offensive line coach at Miami’s Southridge High School.
Werner was a graduate assistant at Miami during the 1987-88 seasons, workingwith UM quarterbacks Steve Walsh, Craig Erickson and Gino Torretta during anera in which the Hurricanes went 23-1 and won the 1987 NationalChampionship. In 1989, he was a volunteer assistant coach working with thewide receivers on another Miami National Championship team.
Werner began his college coaching career in 1986 as an assistant coach atCornell University. Prior to going to Cornell, Werner coached five seasonson the high school level.
He began his coaching career as a college student, offering his services tolocal schools around Western Michigan University: Dowogiac Junior High,Portage Central High School and Kalamazoo Christian High School. His firstfull-time job came in 1983 at Tarpon Springs High School as a junior varsitydefensive coordinator. In 1984-85 Werner was the offensive coordinator atCountryside High School in Clearwater.
Werner graduated from Western Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree inEducation in 1983. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, he attended ParkwayCentral High School. He and his wife, Kim, have one daughter, Maya (2).
