Hurricanes Fall To UConn, 60-53

STORRS, Conn. – Albert Mouring had 19 points and Caron Butler added 17to lead Connecticut to a 60-53 win over Miami on Saturday.
Mouring scored four of the last six points of the game as the Huskies heldoff the Hurricanes, who rallied to within six from a 23-point deficit.
With the win, UConn (18-9, 7-7 Big East) avenged a 3-point loss to Miami onJan. 20.
Each team had 30 rebounds and 14 turnovers. Miami, the top-shooting 3-pointteam in the Big East, faltered behind the arc and shot just 4-of-9 from longrange.
UConn built a 39-16 lead with 17:45 remaining in the game and would need allof that cushion. Over the next 11 minutes, Miami (14-11, 6-9) outscored theHuskies 21-4. John Salmons had 12 of his team-leading 16 points in the secondhalf and six points in that spurt.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Miami’s James Jones and Marcus Barnes cutUConn’s lead to six at 43-37. The Hurricanes would get no closer the rest ofthe way.
Butler had nine points and Mouring had seven in UConn’s game opening 18-4run. The scoring slowed to a crawl after that. The Huskies went 15 straightpossessions over seven minutes without scoring. Miami got four points fromSalmon in a 8-0 run in that span.
The Hurricanes shot just 22 percent in the first half and had 10 turnoversin the period.
Mouring’s 3-pointer with 14:34 left in the first half kicked off a 9-4 runto end the half and UConn took a 30-16 lead at the break.
James Jones finished with 11 points for Miami and had a game-high sevenboards. The Huskies held Miami scoring leader Darius Rice to five points, 10below his average.
Butler, Edmund Saunders and Souleymane Wane had six rebounds apiece forUConn.
