MIAMI (AP) – Sophomore forward James Jones scored a career-high 19 points tolead the University of Miami to an 83-73 victory over Eastern Illinois in anon-conference game Monday night.
Freshman Darius Rice added 17, including consecutive dunks to cap off a 10-2run, extending Miami’s lead to 63-49 with 6:23 remaining.
Panthers’ Henry Domercant scored 29 points and guard Kyle Hill added 26points and 10 rebounds, to score 55 of Eastern Illinois’ 73 points.
Domercant hit five consecutive free throws to bring Eastern Illinois towithin 71-64 with 2:00 left, but that was as close as the Panthers would get.
Miami (5-3) pushed its home record to 4-0, while snapping a six-game winningstreak by Eastern Illinois (6-3).
The Panthers shot a season-low 38.8 percent from the field, while Miami hada season-high eight 3-pointers and 23 assists.
In a series that started in 1949, Miami holds a 2-1 advantage againstEastern Illinois. The teams hadn’t played each other since 1988 and it wastheir first meeting in Miami.
