Men's Basketball Opens Season At FAU

Nov. 17, 2000

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami men’s basketball team will open the 2000-01 season against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, November 18 beginning at 7:45 p.m. at FAU Gymnasium in Boca Raton, FL.

Miami, the defending BIG EAST regular-season champion, is 13-0 all-time against the Owls and looks to win its eighth consecutive season opener.

The Hurricanes return eight lettermen, including starting forward John Salmons, from last season’s team that finished 23-11, won the BIG EAST regular season title and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

Florida Atlantic, under the guidance of second year coach Sidney Green, enters the 2000-01 season with a team consisting of just one returning letterman. This year’s team is extremely young with eleven newcomers gracing the Owls’ roster including seven freshmen. Last season’s squad finished with a 2-28 record including a 0-18 record in the Trans America Athletic Conference.

The game marks the UM debut of new head coach Perry Clark. Clark took over the UM program after spending the last 11 seasons at Tulane. While at Tulane, Clark recorded six 20-win seasons and advanced to postseason play seven times.

The game will be broadcast live on WSBR (740 AM) with WQAM radio host John “Boog” Sciambi calling all the action. The game will also be broadcast live on the internet at the official website for Hurricane Athletics – www.hurricanesports.com.

Miami opens its home schedule on Nov. 21 against Columbia at 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Arena. Season ticket packages are still available for as little as $99. For ticket information contact the Hurricane Ticket Office at 305-284-CANES in Dade or 1-800-GO-CANES.
