CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami women’s tennis team had a strong showing in day one of the first-ever Hurricane Fall Classic at The Neil Schiff Tennis Center on the UM campus.
Igna de Villiers, Abby Smith and Lauren Scaglione led the Hurricanes each going 2-0 on the day.
De Villiers, the No. 1 seed in Flight C defeated Valeria Papandrea of Barry University 6-4, 6-0, before downing Ewa Kleczek of Barry 6-4, 6-4. She will face the No. 4 seed Karolee Jones of FIU in the morning.
Scaglione, the No. 4 seed in Flight B defeated J. Dougherty of Stetson 6-0, 6-4, before knocking off Mei Ly of FIU 6-4, 7-5. She will face Cristina Campana of FIU who knocked off the No. 1 seed Marcy Hora of Miami.
Smith won the first match by default before beating Ewa Kleczek of FIU 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. She will face Stephanie Beaulieu Saturday morning.
Play will resume Saturday morning and continue throughout the day. Admission is free.
