Wayne Looks To Extend Streaks Against Florida State

Oct. 4, 2000

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Senior wide receiver Reggie Wayne will look to extend his impressive streak of consecutive games with a pass reception to 29 this weekend against the Florida State Seminoles. The record for consecutive games with a catch is 33, set by Michael Irvin and Lamar Thomas during their respective careers.

Wayne’s 28 consecutive games with a catch ranks eighth nationally among active pass-catching streaks. The last game Wayne did not get a pass reception was against Arkansas State on November 1, 1997.

Additionally, Wayne has caught at least one touchdown pass in the Hurricanes last seven games, including the Toyota Gator Bowl. His 21-yard TD catch at Rutgers marked his team-high sixth touchdown on the season, which extended his streak that began against Rutgers at the Orange Bowl late last season. The record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass is eight games, set by Irvin in 1988.

Wayne will also look to make his 36th career start against FSU. He actually surpassed the previous record for starts by a UM wide receiver two weeks ago against West Virginia. The old record was 34 starts, set by both Irvin and Thomas.

Both Wayne and teammate Santana Moss are getting closer to the all-time receiving mark at Miami held by Irvin (2,423). No. 3 Wayne enters the FSU game with 2,100 receiving yards, just the third UM receiver to surpass 2000 career yards, while No. 4 Moss enters the game with 1,960 career receiving yards.

No. 2 on the all-time list Thomas, who has 2,271 career yards.

At West Virginia, two weeks ago, Wayne established the new mark for career receptions when he surpassed Thomas’ old-mark of 144 catches.

Wayne now enters the FSU game with 150 career catches, while Moss moved up on the list to No. 6 with 110 career catches.

Moss recorded three catches at Rutgers last weekend to move out of a tie with Randal Hill (107) and ahead of Glenn Dennison (108).

“When you think of the [receivers] past, Michael Irvin, Lamar Thomas, it’s outstanding,” Wayne said to media following the West Virginia game. “I tried not to think about it, but as the game went on and we started moving the ball and being productive, I asked how many catches I had and started counting down.”

For his effort against the Mountaineers, Wayne was also honored by the BIG EAST Conference as Offensive Player of the Week, his first career weekly honor from the conference. He accounted for 43.6 percent of the Hurricane receiving yards against the Mountaineers. He also had Miami’s two receiving touchdowns, scoring on catches of 38 and 47 yards. His first TD gave Miami a 14-7 lead.
