Leier Bows Out In Olympic Semifinal

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Former University of Miami swimmer RhiannonLeier (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) finished sixth in her semifinal heat andbarely missed qualifying for the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke at theSummer Olympic Games being held in Sydney, Australia.
Leier, competing in her first Olympic Games as a member of theCanadian Olympic Team, finished in a time of 1:09.63 to miss qualifying forthe final by three tenths of a second.
Leier, 23, reached the semifinal by taking third in her preliminaryheat (1:09.68) earlier in the day. Her time was the 12th fastest of thepreliminary round.
Leier is a 1999 graduate of the University of Miami where she was athree-time BIG EAST Champion in the 100-yard breaststroke (1996, 1997,1999). She qualified for the Olympics with a first-place finish in the100-meter breaststroke at the Canadian Olympic Trials.
