Crew Competes At BIG EAST Regatta

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami tied for seventh overall with 14 points at the 7th Georgetown Invitational for BIG EAST Schools on the Potomac River in Washington D.C.
Miami, which sent just three boats to the annual regatta, was highlighted by a second place finish from its women’s second varsity eight. The UM women’s varsity eight placed fourth. The women’s novice eight placed second in the petite final, while the men’s varsity eight won the petite final.
“The BIG EAST definitely has some faster boats than it did in previous years,” added Head Coach Joe O’Connor. “Syracuse is definitely the top boat in the field, while another handful of teams, including Miami, are fighting for that second spot.”
In the women’s second varsity eight final, UM placed second behind Syracuse (6:39.27) with a time of 6:45.29. The Hurricanes placed ahead of Notre Dame (6:47.91) and Connecticut (7:03.00). The UM second varsity eight consisted of coxswain Jenny Lee and rowers Kristi Killingsworth, Lindsey Tarabula, Marijka VanderPol, Kate Weeden, Lavonne Tarafa, Angie Hargot, Bernadette Lack and Yianna Reizakis.
In the women’s varsity eight, Miami finished fourth with a time of 6:32.06, behind first-place Syracuse (6:16.06), Villanova (6:20.06) and Rutgers (6:30.07). The women’s varsity eight consisted of coxswain Meg Venezia and rowers Michele McVeagh, Cathy Dunnet, Monika Manios, Amanda Turner, Julie Bender, Liz Payer, Britta Chambers and Megan McGrath.
The novice women’s eight, which did not earn a berth in the finals, finished second in the petite final with a time of 6:58.52, narrowly behind Syracuse (6:56.8). The novice women placed ahead of Connecticut (7:04.81) and West Virginia (7:31.24).
On the men’s side, the varsity eight did not earn a berth in the finals, but won the petite finals with a time of 5:55.8. The UM men placed ahead of Notre Dame (6:01.34), Syracuse (6:06.50) and Villanova (6:20.74). The varsity men were led by coxswains Rob Bowman and Alphonso Wongvalle and rowers Rich Gustin, Mike Hayes, Alex Meillat, Steaven Nieratka, Albert Parlade, Robin Ray, James Reilly, Adam Uhrynowski and Matt Webb.
UM Crew returns to the water on Saturday, May 13. The women’s varsity eight will compete for a spot in the NCAA Championships at the NCAA qualifier on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, TN, while the men will row at the Champion Intercollegiate Championship in Worcestor, MA.
