Hurricane Women Sign 6-7 Center
April 25, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – Head women’s basketball coach Ferne Labati announces the signing of 6-7 center EdMarie Lumbsly (Kingston, Jamaica) to a national letter of intent to attend the University of Miami next fall.
“Lumbsly has a tremendous amount of potential,” said Labati. “She is an excellent shot blocker and rebounder who runs the floor very well for her size. Her addition gives us added depth down low.”
Lumbsly averaged 5.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game last season in helping lead Tallahassee Community College to a 22-12 record and a trip to the Florida Junior College Athletic Association championship game.
“I wanted to go to a school that would help me grow academically as well as athletically,” said Lumbsly. “Miami has a strong academic reputation and I liked the fact that the smaller classes allow for more individualized attention.”
Lumbsly, who shot 53.3 percent (72-135) from the floor last season, set TCC single game records with nine blocks against Chipola on February 23, and 20 rebounds versus Gulf Coast in the FJCAA title game on March 4.
Over the final five games of the season Lumbsly averaged 7.0 points, 12.8 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game as the Lady Eagles made their run through the state playoffs.
Lumbsly is the third player to sign with Miami. The Hurricanes signed 6-4 center Shannon Presswood (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada) and 6-2 forward Shaquana Wilkins (Orlando, Florida) during the early signing period in November.
