March 31, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – University of Miami Crew hits the road this weekend, as the 19th-ranked UM women travel to Boston, MA to take on No. 10 Boston University and No. 20 Syracuse in a match race, while the UM men travel to Clemson, SC for the Clemson Sprints.
“The varsity women have been rowing real well,” said Head Coach Joe O’Connor. “With our strong performance against Central Florida, I think the varsity boats feel very confident going into this weekend. This is probably the biggest head-to-head race in the history of our program. I am optimistic about our chances against two established programs.”
Two weekends ago, the UM men’s and women’s varsity eights swept Central Florida in a match race at the Hurricanes’ home course on Indian Creek in Miami Beach. The dominant effort by Miami against Central Florida marked the third straight season that UM won all the varsity eight events.
The women’s varsity eight for the upcoming match race against Boston University and Syracuse will consist of coxswain Jenny Lee, Angelina Hargot, Marijka Vanderpol, Britta Chambers, Marleen Meijeringh, Monika Manios, Amanda Turner, Katherine Weeden and Megan McGrath. UM’s second varsity eight consists of coxswain Meg Venezia, Cathy Dunnet, Lindsey Tarabula, Elizabeth Payer, Michele McVeagh, Kristi Killingsworth, Julie Bender, Levonne Tarafa and Yianna Reizakis.
The Hurricanes opened up the 2000 sprint season at the annual President’s Cup in Tampa, FL on March 11. The varsity women’s eight raced to a Silver medal, behind Ivy League power Yale and ahead of Bronze medallist Central Florida. Miami’s highest medal came in the junior varsity women’s eight, where the Hurricanes earned a Gold medal, ahead of Yale, Georgetown and Central Florida.
Last season, the UM men won the Gold in the varsity four and novice four, while earning Silver in the varsity eight at the Clemson Sprints.
The men are led by coxswains Rob Bowman and Alphonso Wongvalle and rowers Rich Gustin, Mike Hayes, Alex Meillat, Steaven Niertaka, Albert Parlade, Robin Ray, James Reilly, Adam Uhrynowski and Matt Webb.
The UM men and women return to action next weekend, Saturday, April 8 for the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta in Tampa, FL.
