March 14, 2000
Coral Gables, FL – University of Miami Crew will host in-state rival Central Florida in a match race on Saturday, March 18 on Indian Creek in Miami Beach. Sprints begin at 8:30 a.m. from outside UM’s Ronald W. Shane Watersports Center with the final event starting at 11:10 a.m.
The Hurricanes opened up the 2000 sprint season last weekend at the annual President’s Cup in Tampa, FL. The 19th-ranked varsity women’s eight raced to a Silver medal, behind Ivy League power Yale and ahead of Bronze medallist Central Florida. Miami’s highest medal came in the junior varsity women’s eight, where the Hurricanes earned a Gold medal, ahead of Yale, Georgetown and Central Florida.
The women’s varsity eight for the upcoming match race against UCF will consist of Angelina Hargot, Marijka Vanderpol, Michele McVeagh, Marleen Meijeringh, Britta Chambers, Amanda Turner, Katherine Weeden and Megan McGrath. UM’s second varsity eight consists of Cathy Dunnet, Monika Manios, Lindsey Tarabula, Elizabeth Payer, Kristi Killingsworth, Julie Bender, Levonne Tarafa and Yianna Reizakis. The coxswains are Jenny Lee, Cina Quezeda and Meaghan Venezia.
At last season’s match race against UCF, Miami crew placed first in seven of nine races. The varsity women swept the Golden Knights and Jacksonville University in four of eight races. Additionally, JU started off the event winning the men’s varsity four and women’s novice four before the Hurricanes swept the remaining seven races.
“It is very important for our varsity women to race well this weekend,” said Head Crew Coach Joe O’Connor. “We picked up Silver last week at the President’s Cup, but we were expecting Gold. I believe our varsity women are at the point were we go into every race confident that we can come away with Gold.”
