'Canes Travel to Big East Championships

CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams look to claim the BIG EAST Championships on February 17-19 at the Goodwill Games Aquatic Center in Uniondale, NY.

This year’s women’s squad has been led by junior All-American and 1999 NCAA Diver of the Year Jenny Keim (1-, 3-, and 10-meter platform), All-American Amy Lindblom (500-, 1000-, 1650-freestyle), senior NCAA qualifier Julie Kemp (500-, 1000-, 1650-freestyle and 50- 100-, 200-backstroke), junior Jen Weir (50-, 100-, 200-freestyle and 200 individual medley), freshman Elaine Schwartz (100-, 200-butterfly and 400 individual medley), and freshman diver Katie Beth Bryant (1- and 3-meter).

On the men’s side, expect big things from senior All-American Tyce Routson (1-, 3-, and 10-meter platform), junior Daniel Asencio (50- 100-freestyle and 100-, 200-backstroke), sophomore Scott Gentles (200-butterfly and 500-, 1000-, 1650-freestyle), and freshman Kyle Prandi (1-, 3- and 10-meter platform).

Last season, former Hurricane All-Americans Rhiannon Leier (100-breaststroke and 200 individual medley) and Rio Ramirez (1- and 3-meter diving) each won two BIG EAST titles, while current Hurricane Jenny Keim won the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

The University of Miami men’s diving team has won the 1- and 3-meter diving events every year since they joined the conference in 1992. The women have a streak dating back to 1997 in the 1-meter and 1996 in the 3-meter.

Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle relays.
