Men's Hoops Rallies To Defeat Pittsburgh, 64-60

MIAMI (AP) – Vernon Jennings scored 14 points, including six during acritical second-half run, to lead Miami to a 64-60 victory over PittsburghTuesday night.
Miami’s John Salmons‘ driving layup gave the Hurricanes (13-8, 6-2) a 62-59lead with 47 seconds left. Pittsburgh then missed three straight 3-pointattempts before Leroy Hurd sealed Miami’s fourth straight Big East victory withtwo free throws.
Johnny Hemsley, the Hurricanes’ leading scorer, was held to 10 points on2-of-15 shooting from the field.
Ricardo Greer, who scored 21 points to lead Pittsburgh (9-9, 1-6), hit a3-pointer to slice Miami’s lead to 56-55 with 5:50 left.
A Jennings’ steal and layup, followed by two free throws boosted Miami’slead to 60-55 with 3:41 left.
Greer’s driving layup cut it to 60-57. Pittsburgh then missed 2-of-4 freethrows and Chris Seabrooks turned the ball over with the Panthers trailing60-59 with 1:06 left. Seabrooks scored 11 points.
Pittsburgh led 49-46 when a technical foul on Seabrooks ignited an 8-0Hurricanes’ run. Jennings, who was fouled on the play, hit four straight freethrows. Elton Tyler hit a layup and Jennings scored on a scoop shot to giveMiami a 54-49 lead with 7:41 left.
Hemsley’s 3-pointer capped off a 14-2 Miami first-half run and gave theHurricanes a 28-27 lead. The Hurricanes led 32-30 at halftime.
Greer, who is averaging 17.8 points a game, scored 12 points in the firsthalf.
Miami’s Mario Bland was accidentally hit in the head and knocked unconsciousin the first half. He did not return.
