Women Win, Men Fall at FAU

CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team defeated Florida Atlantic, 136.50-125.50, while the men fell, 181-80, to the Owls. The women’s victory marks the second time this season that they have defeated FAU and helped improve their record to 8-4. This victory also represents the women’s fifth straight. The men’s loss means that their record now falls to 3-9.
The women were led by junior Jen Weir (Cooper City, FL), senior All-American Amy Lindblom (Milford, CT), freshman Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ), and sophomore Emily Spychala (Odessa, FL). Weir tallied first-place finishes in three events, while Lindblom, Schwartz, and Spychala all had victories in two-events. Weir won the 100- and the 200-yard freestyle, as well as the 200-yard individual medley. Lindblom took the 500- and the 1650-yard freestyle, as Schwartz won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events. Spychala swept the diving, by winning both the 1- and 3-meter events. Also, freshman Kirsten Holz (Orlando, FL) grabbed a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke.
The men were led by junior Scott Gentles (Atlanta, GA), sophomore Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville, AL), junior Dan Asencio (Newark, NJ) and senior All-American Tyce Routson (Provo, UT). Gentles garnered a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and also scored a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Stoddard placed first in the 1650-yard freestyle and also took home third in the 200-yard individual medley. Asencio earned a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, while Routson swept both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
The Hurricanes return to action on February 11th, when the divers head to Orlando, FL for the All Star Diving Invitational.
