Hurricanes Fall In BIG EAST Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team (6-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell to No. 11 Rutgers (9-2, 2-0 BIG EAST), 65-45, on Wednesday at the Rutgers Athletic Center on the New Brunswick campus.The Scarlet Knights opened the game with a 10-3 run to take early control of the BIG EAST matchup. The ‘Canes shot a dismal 8-for-29 from the floor and had 12 turnovers in the first half. RU took a 37-21 advantage into halftime.UM then opened the second half with a 17-3 run to bring the game within two at the 13:44 mark. Rutgers’ Davalyn Cunningham keyed a 9-3 run with a three-point play and a layup to extend the lead. The Hurricanes were held scoreless for the final eight minutes of the game as the Scarlet Knights built the final margin to 20 points.UM was led by Sheila James‘ 12 points and eight rebounds. Alicia Hartlaub and Dalia Clarke chipped in with 10 points apiece.Rutgers was led by Shawnetta Stewart’s 15 points.
