MIAMI FALLS TO CLEMSON

Coral Gables, FL – The University of Miami men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both experienced defeats at the hands of Clemson University on Friday, December 17. The Hurricane women (3-4) lost 127-102, while the UM men (1-5) were defeated by a score of 136-87.
The Hurricane women were led by freshman Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ), junior Jen Weir (Cooper City, FL), and the diving trio of freshman Katie Beth Bryant (Chatham, IL), sophomore Emily Spychala (Odessa, FL), and junior All-American and 1999 NCAA Diver of the Year Jenny Keim (Ft. Lauderdale, FL). Schwartz took home a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and a third place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Weir took home a second place finish in the breaststroke and a third place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. The divers took a clean sweep in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, with Bryant taking first in the one-meter and third in the three-meter, Spychala taking second in both events, and Keim, in her first competition of the year taking third in the 1-meter, but bringing home first in the 3-meter.
On the men’s side, sophomore Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville, AL), sophomore Imre Lengyel (Budapest, Hungary), and red-shirt freshman Kyle Prandi (Strongsville, OH) led the Hurricanes. Stoddard took home a second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle and a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle to help led the ‘Canes. Lengyel and Prandi finished first and second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, with Lengyel taking first and Prandi, in his first competition of the season, taking second in both events.
The Hurricanes will be off until Jan. 6 when they head to Austin, TX for the Texas Diving Invitational.
