Women's Hoops Falls Late to Gators, 85-77

Charlottesville, VA – The University of Miami women’s basketball team (2-2) led for the majority of the game, but fell late in the second half, 85-77, to Florida (3-1) at the Knight Sports Complex on the UM campus.
The Hurricanes, who led 47-33 at halftime, shot 29 percent in the second half, while the Gators made 51 percent of their second half shots to eventually take the lead the for good with 4:45 remaining.
Miami was led by freshman Alicia Hartlaub‘s career-high double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Along with Hartlaub, sophomore Sheila James also had a career-best 19 points, including three three-pointers. Junior Camilla Osth added 12 points to round out UM double-figure scoring.
Tonya Washington’s 22 points and eight rebounds led the Gators offensively and defensively. Tamara Stocks and Tiffany Travis each added 17 points to round out UF double-figure scoring.
The Hurricanes jumped out quick on Florida as UM built its first double-digit lead, 27-17, at 8:09 in the first half. Miami would later extend its first half lead to as much as 16 points near the close of the period. For the first half, Miami shot 51.7 percent to UF’s 38.2 percent, while out-rebounding the Gators 28-13. UM’s James led the ‘Canes in the first half with 17 points.
In the second half, UF forced Miami into nine turnovers resulting in 16 points for the Gators and were out-rebounded 25-18. UF’s Washington led the Gator attack in the second half with 16 points.
The Hurricanes return to action on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Knight Sports Complex as the Florida International Golden Panthers travel cross-town for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
