Men's Basketball Downs Monmouth In Home Opener

MIAMI, Fla. (AP) – Johnny Hemsley scored 24 points and Miami never trailed Tuesdaynight in winning its home opener for the seventh straight season, 67-46 overMonmouth.
Elton Tyler had 11 points and John Salmons added 10 for the Hurricanes(2-0), who led 47-37 before blowing the game open with an 11-2 run late in thesecond half.
Rahsaan Johnson led Monmouth (0-2) with 14 points. Quin Hayes added 11, butthe Hawks missed 18 of 23 shots from behind the 3-point arc.
A steal and layup by Mario Bland sparked Miami’s decisive surge. Abehind-the-back pass by Paulo Coelho set up a Hemsley dunk, who finished therun with an offensive putback for a 58-39 lead with 4:25 remaining.
Miami led by 15 in the first half before Monmouth, which upset theHurricanes 64-62 in the only other meeting between the schools in 1988, trimmedits deficit to 34-35 at the break.
Monmouth was hampered in the second half by foul trouble. Miami, whichplayed without injured point guard Michael Simmons, made 14 of 19 free throwsdown the stretch.
Guard Vernon Jennings also sat out for Miami because of unspecifieddisciplinary reasons.
