Men's Hoops Open at Home Tuesday

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 24th-ranked University of Miami men’sbasketball team (1-0) opens its 1999-2000 home schedule against Monmouth(0-1) on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Miami Arena.

Miami, which has won six consecutive home openers, has posted a57-16 (.781) record at the Miami Arena over the last five seasons. TheHurricanes’ home record over the last five seasons ranks as the fourth bestamong BIG EAST teams behind only Connecticut, Villanova and Georgetown.

The Hurricanes are coming off of an 81-54 win over Central Floridain their season opener last Friday. Miami was led by National Player of theYear candidate Johnny Hemsley who poured in a game-high 17 points.

Senior center Mario Bland and junior forward Elton Tyler added 14 apiece forthe Hurricanes while senior point guard Vernon Jennings, the BIG EAST assistleader last season, handed out a team-high six assists.

Monmouth travels to Miami following a 37-35 loss at Princeton onSaturday. Monmouth was led by sophomore guard Rahsaan Johnson who scored agame-high 13 points off the bench.
