Varsity Men Dominate at First Coast Head Race

Jacksonville, FL – The University of Miami men’s crew raced to three first place finishes in the four races it was entered at the First Coast Head Race on the Arlington and St. John’s River.

The varsity men raced to the fastest times of the day and defeated its opponents by over a minute in the Championship Eight and Four races, while UM’s novice crew also took home a first place finish in its Eights race. The novice four boat finished its race seventh place.

Led by the return of seniors Michael Hayes, Jas Grocholski, Rich Gustin and Holt Haynsworth, the varsity men won the championship eight race with a time of 15:41. The nearest second-place finisher was Jacksonville Univ., who finished over a minute later (16:48). South Carolina finished third, followed by North Carolina State’s A and B boats and Central Florida.

The men’s championship four entry won its race with a time of 17:44, nearly a minute later UCF (18:41) finished the race. The Knights were followed by South Carolina (18:55), N.C. State A (19:29), Miami’s B boat (19:30), N.C. State B (20:02) and Stetson (20:13).

UM’s novice eight entry won with a time of 18:07, followed by N.C. State B (19:01), South Florida (19:43), Miami B (19:49) and N.C. State A (20:09).

The novice four finished in seventh place with a time of 24:16. The first place finisher in the Novice Four race was Jacksonville (19:02).

Next up for UM Crew is the Head of the Chattahoochee on Nov. 6 on the Olympic Course in Gainesville, GA.
