Miami-East Carolina Football Game Moved To Raleigh, North Carolina.

Sept. 20, 1999

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In the Hurricane Floyd aftermath, East Carolina University has moved its football game with the University of Miami to Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, NC, the home stadium for the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Game time is still set for 6 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

Mike Hamrick, East Carolina University director of athletics, said that it is not feasible to play the game at ECU’s Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

“Both electricity and water are at risk in Greenville for the next few days,” Hamrick said. “Facilities and law enforcement officials are already stretched thin. We didn’t want to put our fans in harm’s way or add to the burdens of recovering from the disaster that is all around us. “I also would like to thank our colleagues at North Carolina State University for agreeing to host this game. This is an exceptionally generous decision on their part and we are grateful to them.”

“I am pleased with the decision to move the game,” said Miami athletic director Paul Dee. “Our first concern is to the safety and well-being of the people affected by this situation. Mike (Hamrick) and his staff are to be commended for the work they have done to get this game played.”

“Having gone through a very similar situation last season with the UCLA game, we fully understand why the game was forced to move,” added Hurricane head coach Butch Davis. “With this much advance notice, it shouldn’t be a distraction for either team.”

Tickets purchased for the East Carolina/Miami game will honored at Carter-Finley Stadium with all seating General Admission.

Due to flooding and power outages in the Greenville, NC area classes at ECU have been cancelled for the entire week.
