Women's Soccer Kicks Off Against Barry

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team kickoff its 1999 season with an exhibition match against Barry University onSunday, August 22 at 4 p.m. at the new Cobb Stadium for Women’s Soccer,Track and Field on the UM campus.
The Hurricanes, playing in just their second season, return severalstarters from last year’s 11-7-1 inaugural squad, including leading goal andpoint scorer Jenny Sanchez, Soccer Buzz’ “First-Year” Programs Player of theYear Nina Wathne and National Second Team selection Deidre Bass.
Miami also adds many new faces, including 1998 Gatorade/FloridaPlayer of the Year Alexis McKenzie, who transferred from Florida, 1999 MiamiHerald Player of the Year Samantha Hernandez and 1999Palm Beach Post Playerof the Year Lisa Gomez.
Barry University finished 12-4-0 in 1998 and are led by first-yearhead coach Mike Neveu. The Buccaneers fell to Lynn, 1-0, in the NCAADivision II South Regional to end the 1998 season and return top threescorers Jenny Nilsson (46 points in ’98), Adria Gaete (39 pts.) and LaurenGuda (34 pts.).
Cobb Stadium is located on UM’s Coral Gables campus at 5821 SanAmaro Drive, between the Hecht Athletic Center and Mark Light baseballstadium. Parking is located at the facility and admission is free.
