Miami Crews Earn Five Medals at Georgetown Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Miami men’s and women’s crew,highlighted by bronze medal finishes in the men’s varsity fours andwomen’s varsity eights, placed among the top three in five of the nine racesit entered at the 1999 Georgetown Invitational Rowing Regatta for BIGEAST Schools on the Potomac River.

The women’s varsity eights finished behind No. 19 Syracuse (6:21.97)and No. 24 Georgetown (6:24.45) with a time of 6:30.56. The bronzemedal finish continued the varsity eights streak of top three finishes ineach of the seven races it entered this year. The women’s varsity eightsconsists of Mandy Turner, Britta Chambers, Aisha Chow, Megan McGrath, MicheleMcVeagh, Cathy Dunnet, Elizabeth Payer, Marijka VanderPol and coxswainJenny Lee.

The men’s varsity fours also placed third behind top-seededGeorgetown (6:28.46) and Syracuse (6:29.20) with a time of 6:38.04.The men’s varsity four, who also won the bronze medal at the SouthernIntercollegiate Rowing Association regatta on April 18, consists ofRich Gustin, Jas Grocholski, Aaron Krigelski, Chris Manti and coxswain RobBowman.

Other UM top finishes came in the Men’s Freshmen Petite Eights (1st,6:26.34), Men’s Varsity Lightweight Fours (3rd, 6:51.99) and the Women’sNovice Fours (2nd, 8:15.18).

Georgetown won the overall points trophy, followed by Syracuse. TheMiami men and women placed fifth overall.
