Canes Conclude Play at Miami Spring Invite

RESULTS

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Miami Spring Invite Sunday, winning four of six contests against Ole Miss, which is receiving votes in the Oracle/ITA poll.

“Great way to finish a good weekend of tennis against some of the best teams in the country,” Miami head coach Aljosa Piric said. “Our guys competed hard and finished the weekend strong. This tournament gave our guys a good glimpse of what it means to compete as a team and what it means to compete together. We will continue to work hard and continue to get better. I am excited to officially open up the season next Friday, and I am very excited to ultimately see what this team is capable of doing.”

Due to wet courts at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, the start of play was delayed three hours, with the Hurricanes squaring off against eighth-ranked Texas in doubles action following the conclusion of the Longhorns’ singles matches against Wisconsin.

In doubles, the Hurricanes were unable to overcome Texas’ strong lineup, falling short on all four courts.

Sophomores Pablo Aycart and Tatsuki Shimamoto dropped their match against Nevin Arimilli and Johnny Goodwin, 1-8, while sophomore Bojan Jankulovski and freshman Francisco Bastias fell to Chih Chi Huang and Yuya Ito, 3-8.

Leonardo Telles and Colin Markes topped redshirt junior Dane Dunlap and freshman Franco Aubone, 8-5, before Adria Soriano Barrera and Kaya Gore came up short against No. 33 Harrison Scott and Christian Sigsgaard, 6-8.

In singles play, the Hurricanes got off to a hot start claiming five of six opening sets. No. 97 Bastias was the first to seal a match, breezing through his contest against Ole Miss freshman Jan Soren Hain, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 35 Jankulovski followed closely behind, earning a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Tim Sandkaulen, before Gore bested Sebastian Rios, 6-4, 6-3.

Closing out the tournament a 2-1 in singles play, Aubone downed Cotter Wilson, 6-3, 6-3.

In a back-and-forth battle, Shimamoto came up short against Simon Junk 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, before all eyes turned over to the final match of the three-day weekend.

Squaring off against Fabien Fallert, Dunlap claimed the opening set, 6-4, before the Rebel forced a third-set tiebreaker. In that final set, Miami’s redshirt junior overcame a pair of match points against to even the final set at six apiece. However, Fallert ultimately sealed the win, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

The Hurricanes will return to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday at 11 a.m. when they welcome Stetson and Liberty to their home courts to kick off the dual season. Both matches will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, with the latter scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
