Football Jersey Policy

Miami Athletics, in conjunction with the Ring of Honor Committee, established a policy in 2023 for retiring and honoring jersey numbers for the football program.

A former player must be 10 years removed from playing his last game at Miami to be considered for a jersey number retirement.

Based on the policy, National Player of the Year will serve as the minimum criteria for jersey retirement. Retired jerseys can be issued to current student-athletes under special circumstances, and Miami Athletics will work collaboratively with the retired jersey honoree and coaching staff in those instances.

Honored jerseys are recognized by the program but can still be issued to current student-athletes.

The National Player of the Year criteria for retired jerseys can be waived in lieu of extenuating circumstances or a player’s overall contributions to the program. Those decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis and must be presented to the Vice President/Director of Athletics, who will work with the Ring of Honor Committee to secure approval.

The football program has the Ring of Honor, which serves as the highest accolade for a Hurricanes football player or coach. For more information on the Ring of Honor please click here.
