Terry Richardson is in his third season as the University of Miami’s running backs coach and Florida Recruiting Coordinator.
Richardson, known for his aggressive run game and producing talented student-athletes, mentored Freshman All-American Duke Johnson, who posted one of the greatest freshman seasons in program history. Johnson, who was a second-team Walter Camp All-America selection as a kick returner, rushed for a UM freshman-record 947 yards and 10 touchdowns and was named 2012 ACC Rookie of the Year.
In 2011, Richardson coached redshirt sophomore Lamar Miller to one of the best seasons in Miami’s storied history. Miller finished the 2011 campaign with 1,272 yards on the ground to mark the third-best season in Canes history behind Willis McGahee (1,753) and Edgerrin James (1,416). Under Richardson’s guidance, Miller became the eighth player in program history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a season and had seven games with more than 100 rushing yards.
The Broward (Fla.) County native returned to South Florida after spending 12 seasons at Connecticut as the running backs coach.
Richardson groomed UConn running back Jordan Todman into one of the nation’s best rushers. Todman, the 2010 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, was second in the country in rushing at 143.09 and first in the BIG EAST. Under Richardson’s tutelage, Todman earned second-team All-America honors from the Walter Camp Foundation.
In 2010, UConn’s rushing offense was ranked 31st in the nation at 179.92 yards per game. Todman amassed 1,695 yards on the ground to lead a trio of rushers.
Noticed for his dominant runners, Richardson was a nominee for the 2010 Broyles Award, honoring the nation’s top college football assistant coaches.
In 2009, Richardson worked with two 1,000-yard rushers in Todman and All-BIG EAST Conference second-team pick Andre Dixon. UConn was just one of three NCAA FBS schools to boast a pair of 1,000-yard rushers.
The 2008 season saw running back Donald Brown become the nation’s leading rusher as he was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-America pick by the Sporting News. He became UConn’s first NFL first-round draft pick in 2009 as he was selected by the Indianapolis Colts.
Richardson is a 1994 graduate of Syracuse where he was a four-year letterwinner at running back and wore the fabled uniform number 44. The coveted jersey is awarded only to exceptional Orange rushers, including Jim Brown and 1961 Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis. Richardson was Syracuse’s leading rusher as a senior in 1993 and played in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game following his senior season. Richardson helped the Orange to three bowl berths during his career, the 1990 Aloha Bowl, 1992 Hall of Fame Bowl and 1993 Fiesta Bowl. Syracuse won all three games.
Richardson signed a free-agent contract with the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals in 1994 and also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles (1995), Kansas City Chiefs (1996) and Pittsburgh Steelers (1996-97). In 1998 he returned to his high school, Northeast, in Oakland Park, Fla. as offensive coordinator and running backs coach to start his coaching career.
