UM Falls to Virginia Tech in Final Regular-Season ACC Match

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team surrendered a game-winning goal to Virginia Tech in the 74th minute to fall to the Hokies 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

Falling to 3-11-0 overall and 1-8-0 in conference play on the year, the Hurricanes, playing in their final ACC regular-season match, were held to six shots on goal compared to the Hokies eleven. With the win, Virginia Tech improves to 9-7-0 overall and 4-5-0 in ACC matches this season.

UM keeper Alex Alford was able to hold the Hokies scoreless throughout the first period, registering five saves on eight shots in the first 45 minutes of play as the two schools headed into the half knotted at zero.

Virginia Tech would break the deadlock five minutes into the second period when Ashley Stinson crossed the ball to Erin Moore, who was able to find the back of the net past Alford to give the Hokies a 1-0 lead.

The Virginia Tech advantage would only last for 30 seconds when Lindsay Yach was able to answer for the Hurricanes. Yach took a pass in the middle of the box from teammate Shannon Sanguinetti and connected for her fourth goal of the season to tie the match at one goal apiece at the 50:52 mark.

Virginia Tech keeper Mallory Soldner and UM’s Alford each fended off a shot on the net throughout the next 22 minutes as the two schools battled for opportunities.

The Hokies would break the tie in the 74th minute when Ashley Stinson took a rebounded off a save by Alford to score, giving Virginia Tech a 2-1 lead that would last the remainder of the match.

Miami will play their regular-season finale Oct. 27 taking on in-state rival Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. at 7 p.m.
