Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team took part in a nation-wide initiative Monday night participating in this year’s USTA Tennis Night in America showcase at the Moore Park Tennis Center in Miami, Fla. More than 100 kids from all across South Florida joined the `Canes in this year’s event.
The USTA Tennis Night in America is a celebration of tennis featuring the best female stars competing in the BNP Paribas Showdown for the Billie Jean King Cup, broadcast live from Madison Square Garden on HBO. It also features Youth Registration Night – a historic youth recruitment event. The event took place nationwide on Monday, March 2 in several cities across the United States.
“It’s a great opportunity for our girls to give back to the community, and it’s good for the youth of Miami-Dade to have a chance to interact with collegiate tennis student-athletes from right here in their own city,” expressed eighth-year UM head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews.
UM helped by giving hitting instructions, individual one-on-one lessons and talking with kids about what tennis can do for them physically and mentally. There was also a UM Kids Clinic provided by the Hurricanes.
“The things they are doing over there at Moore Park [Tennis Center] are phenomenal, and they are doing great things for the city of Miami and the community, as a whole,” stated Yaroshuk-Tews. “With the sport of tennis growing ever-so-popular in South Florida, it was great to help out a program that’s showing that kids can be successful in the sport of tennis coming through a public park system. It was truly a joy to see the smiles on those kids’ faces when they were interacting with our girls. It was just a wonderful experience for everyone.”
Other local facilities taking part in the Tennis Night in America showcase were the Tamiami Tennis Center and Ashe/Buchholtz Tennis Center. There were also radio spots used on a local station promoting the event.
“Let me say how much I appreciate the University of Miami Women’s Tennis Team’s involvement in the Tennis Night in America event,” praised Alberta Mora of the Moore Park Tennis Center.
