CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami soccer team fell to 16th-ranked Duke Sunday afternoon on four unanswered goals by the Blue Devils in front of a crowd of 245 at Cobb Stadium.

Sophomore Kelly Pflugner scored the Hurricanes’ lone goal of the afternoon, netting an assist from teammate Sheuneen Ta in the 23rd minute to score the first of her UM career.

The Hurricanes allowed a season-high 13 shots on goal by the Blue Devils to fall to 2-6-0 overall and 1-4-0 in ACC play on the year. Duke, who limited UM to two shots in the second period, improves to 10-2-0 overall and remains undefeated in the ACC at 3-0-0.

“Duke was an extremely efficient and organized team,” head coach Tricia Taliaferro said. “I felt like we really came out well and played with them early, but in the second half we weren’t able to take advantage of a lot of the same opportunities we were working on in the first period.”

Miami opened the scoring in the first period when Ta lofted a pass from midfield to a wide open Pflugner, who was able to get shot off from the top of the box in front of Duke goal keeper Kate Straka to put the Hurricanes up 1-0 at the 22:20 mark.

Duke would answer 11 minutes later with Heidi Hollenbeck netted a goal just past the left side of UM keeper, Alex Alford.

The score would remain deadlocked at one-all for the remainder of the first period and for over 28 minutes into the second until the Blue Devils’ Carmen Bognanno connected on what would be the game-winner in the 74th minute.

The Blue Devils would add a pair of insurance goals late in the second period, scoring twice with less than seven minutes remaining in the match to hold off the UM comeback.

Miami returns to action Thursday, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on 2003 defending National Champions, North Carolina at 7 p.m.
