Women's Soccer Takes On Lynn In Exhibition

CORAL GABLES, Fla.–The University of Miami women’s soccer teamwill take on Lynn University in an exhibition match scheduled forMonday, August 21 at 7 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.

With practice getting underway on Saturday, August 12, theHurricanes have only been together as a team for two weeks. However,they are looking forward to taking the field for the first time againstactual competition.

UM returns 10 starters from last season’s 12-8-0 club. Thefront line will be anchored by the Hurricanes’ leading scorer, AllisonMcWhinney. She totaled 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. Roundingout the line will be juniors Alexis MacKenzie and Jennifer Sanchez.MacKenzie and Sanchez are both coming off of knee injuries last seasonand will bolster the Hurricanes’ offense. Senior Kazmeen Moolchan willbe a key reserve. Newcomer Vonda Matthews is expected to make animmediate impact to the front line. Matthews was a member of the U.S.National Team.

Leading the midfield is junior Jordan Sims and sophomore LauraWest. Sims is considered the on-field leader with her aggressive styleof play. West played in all 20 games as a freshman and will be lookedto this season to help create more scoring opportunities. Junior SharonWilliams has the inside track on the third midfield spot after startingthe final nine games last season.

Also vying for time at midfield are junior Mehryn Corrigan andfreshmen Nicole Safran, Mary Luke and Carrie Readey. Safran and Lukewere members of the O.D.P. Regional Team.

The defense stayed in tact from last season with juniors DeidreBass, Lisa Gomez and sophomore Ashley West returning.This offensive defense is credited with 37 points last season on 11goals and 15 assists. Bass and Gomez were selected to the All-BIG EASTsecond team and Gomes was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Weststarted all 20 games as a freshman last season. Also seeing time ondefense is sophomore Samantha Hernandez.

The goalkeepers Elizabeth Swinson and Rachel Elsby return thisseason to provide consistency in goal. The duo combined for 10 shutoutslast season.
