CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami soccer team notched the biggest win in program history as it knocked off No. 10 Connecticut 3-1 in its BIG EAST opener Friday night at Cobb Stadium.

The Hurricanes (6-4-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) beat the Huskies (4-2-2, 0-1-0) for the first time ever and knocked off a top-10 opponent for the first time.

“We played very well tonight, we practiced our game plan all week and came in and executed it perfectly,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “We had some players really step up, this is a great way for us to open BIG EAST play.”

Miami remains a perfect 5-0-0 in BIG EAST openers.

Sophomore Lindsey Yach (Carrollton, Texas) scored the first two goals for Miami and assisted with the third goal.

She scored the first goal of the night just eight minutes into the match on a short pass from freshman Sheuneen Ta (London, England).

Yach scored the match-winning goal and her sixth goal of the season at the 40 minute mark on a cross from junior Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) putting the Hurricanes up 2-0 at halftime.

The Huskies got on the board at 67:26 as Jessica Gjertsen scored on a pass from Kristen Graczyk.

Butcher sealed the win for Miami in the 78th minute scoring on a pass from Yach and Ta combined.

Freshman goalie Alex Alford (Atlanta, Ga.) played 90 minutes in goal making four saves allowing only one goal on the night. Erin Rice played 90 minutes in goal for the Huskies making six saves allowing three goals.

Miami took 20 total shots 13 on goal, while UConn took 18 total eight on goal. Yach led Miami with six shots taken, including four on goal.

The Hurricanes are back in action hosting St. John’s Sunday at 1 p.m.
