Coral Gables, Fla. – Junior Lane Carico staked her seventh double-double of the year with 11 kills and 15 digs on Friday night, helping the University of Miami volleyball squad storm past the University of San Francisco, 3-0, in opening day action of the 10th Annual Hurricane Invitational at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.

Redshirt-junior Katie Gallagher set the way early, and it was Carico putting down the kills, helping Miami (8-1) to an early lead in the match after claiming the 25-11 advantage in the first set. Gallagher collected three of her nine kills for the match during the first set. She also setup seven assists while Carico produced four kills in the opening frame. Carico also provided two service aces during the opener.

In the second set, USF (0-7) trailed, 8-7, after a kill from the Dons’ Joan Caloiaro. Moments later, UM led, 9-8, before senior middle blocker Ariell Cooke’s kill allowed teammate and sophomore Lizzie Hale to serve six straight points – adding the help of two kills from junior middle blocker Ali Becker, and single kills apiece from Gallagher and freshman Alexandria Johnson.

That allowed Miami to take a commanding 16-8 lead in the second set.

Shortly after checking into the contest for the first time on the night, sophomore hitter Nrithya Sundararaman registered a kill to put UM ahead, 20-10. The `Canes would take the 25-15 win with the help of freshman Taylor Hollins putting down one of her two kills in the set.

Hollins finished the match with five kills and a match and season-high 18 digs.

In the third set, the Dons of San Francisco quickly grabbed the momentum behind the play of Malina Terrell and blocks from teammates Caloiaro and Jordan Irish. The Dons led, 9-5, early-on.

USF clung to a 14-12 lead midway through the set after Alycia Cox nailed a kill. But that’s when Miami began a 4-0 run off a Johnson kill – with the assist from Gallagher. UM took the 16-14 edge with blocks coming at the net from Cooke and Carico.

UM ended the match on a 5-1 run, claiming the 25-18 win in the set – and winning its sixth consecutive match, using the serve of Lizzie Hale and kills from Becker, Williamson and Gallagher.

USF was led on the night by Terrell’s 12-kill performance, while setter Caloiaro setup the offense with 12 assists. The defense of the Dons was charged by Cox (13 digs) and Alaina Sully (11 digs).

The `Canes were led by Carico’s double-double of 11 kills and 15 digs. She also added five assists and three blocks (two assisted). Carico enters Saturday’s two-contest day for the `Canes needing just seven kills to collect 1,000 for her career – becoming the third-fastest in school history to achieve the mark honor.

Gallagher held down nine kills and setup a match-high 31 assists to go along with eight digs and an assisted block. The Winter Park, Fla., native also swung at a career-high .818 clip (9k-0e-11ta). Becker and Johnson each added seven kills, with Johnson staking three blocks (assisted). Ariell Cooke had five kills, five digs and a match-high five blocks (four assisted).

Taylor Hollins, a freshman native of Long Beach, Calif., finished the night with five kills, four assists a block assist and a season and match-high 18 digs.
