Hurricanes Win Three Races on Final Day of South/Central Sprints

Oak Ridge, Tenn. – The Miami rowing squad concluded action at the Aramark South/Central Championships Sunday by winning the B-Final of the Open Four and the C-Final of both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four.

“We had a very strong finish to our season today, ” said head coach Debra Morgan. “The Hurricane crews really stepped up to lead in their respective finals.”

Enjoying temperatures warmer than that of yesterday, the Hurricanes opened the day by winning the C-Final of the Varsity Four. Miami’s crew of Marcy Gunning (Cox), Olivia Arkell, Marenda Chamberlin, Julianne Parker and Justine Lewis turned in a time of 7:53.4 to finish ahead of crews from Clemson, Kansas, Duke, Iowa and Cincinnati.

In Miami’s second race of the day, the Junior Varsity Eight finished third behind Kansas State and Iowa in a time of 7:10.2. The Hurricanes crossed the finish ahead of Cincinnati, North Carolina and Kansas.

The Hurricanes got back to their winning ways when the Varsity Eight crossed the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of second place Indiana with a time of 6:55.1. Miami’s boat of Laura Comeau (Cox), Laura Cordner, Emy Huntsman, Sarah Conlon, Laura Coltman, Natasha Lejer, Rachel Clausing, Kelly Amsler and Karen Wiley came in ahead of Kansas State, Texas, Kansas and Clemson.
        
The Open Four had the strongest showing of any of the Miami crews over the weekend after becoming the only Miami crew to qualify for a B-Final.  The Hurricane crew of Jessica Martin (Cox), Mackenzie Dove, Sarah Greyer, Megan Hudson and Meghan White came in first in the B-Final in a time of 7:52.6 beating out crews from Michigan, Louisville, Texas, Cincinnati and Duke.

“We’ve taken a lot of crucial steps as a team this year and I’m excited to see what we can do next year,” said Morgan.
