Nov. 5, 2007
Coral Gables, Fla. – Coming off a program-best performance in ACC play over the 2007 season, the University of Miami women’s soccer team will be seeded fifth entering this week’s ACC Soccer Championship at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex near Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The Hurricanes (9-6-4, 4-4-2 ACC) will square off versus fourth-seeded and 10th-ranked Virginia (11-3-4, 5-2-3 ACC) in the opening round on Wed., Nov. 7, in the tournament’s second game at 2:30 p.m. During the regular season the teams played to double-overtime in Charlottesville, where the Cavaliers escaped with a 1-0 win with a goal in the 107th minute.
Miami knocked off two top-10 teams during the regular season – including handing defending national champions North Carolina, who enters this week’s tournament as the top seed, its only ACC loss of the season with 1-0 UM victory on Sept. 30. Less than two weeks later, the Hurricanes gave Boston College its first loss of the season to kick off a three-match win streak.
Seniors Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) and Sheuneen Ta (London, England) continue to lead a young Hurricane squad, who has been led in scoring throughout the season by freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.), who ranks eighth in the NCAA with 0.842 goals per game and 16th in the nation with 1.84 points per game.
Winners of Wednesday’s Miami-Virginia game advance to Friday’s semifinals to take on the victor of the game between top-seeded North Carolina and eighth-seeded Clemson. Rounding out the eight-team field is No. 2 seed Wake Forest, No. 3 seed Florida State, No. 6 seed Boston College and No. 7 seed Duke.
