Sept. 10, 2001

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The University of Miami soccer team broke into the national rankings at No. 15 in a poll released by Soccer America Monday afternoon.

The Hurricanes, who entered the 2001 season unranked, impressed pollsters with their impressive 5-0-0 start, including a shutout over No. 20-ranked Florida Sunday afternoon.

UM opened the season at the Florida State Tournament beating Loyola 5-1 and George Mason 3-2. The Hurricanes then opened the home portion of their schedule with a 3-0 win over FAU.

This weekend UM traveled to face UCF and No. 20 Florida, beating both teams 4-1, and 1-0. The Hurricanes have already posted two shutouts so far this season, the total number of shutouts they posted last season.

Miami is also playing without three starters due to injury, forward Nicole Safran, midfielder Jordan Sims and defender Jenna Johnson.

The new national status will be put on the line as Miami travels to face No. 17 Florida State Wednesday night in Tallahassee, Fla.
