Miami to Face Maryland Thursday in Opening Round of 2007 ACC Tournament

The twelfth-seeded <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami men’s basketball team will take on fifth-seeded Maryland Thursday at 2 p.m. in the opening round of the 2007 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament held at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

The winner of Thursday’s Miami-Maryland game will advance to Friday’s quarterfinals where it will face fourth-seeded BostonCollege at 2 p.m.

Head coach Frank Haith and the Hurricanes head to the 2007 ACC Tournament looking to knock off fifth-seeded Maryland, who closed out the regular season winning each of it’s last seven games.

 

Earlier this season Miami upended then 25th-ranked Maryland 63-58 in College Park, holding the Terrapins to a season-low 22.4 percent (13-58) shooting from the field.

 

Miami is led by sophomore guard Jack McClinton who closed out the regular season as the ACC leader in free throw percentage (.896), three-point field goal percentage (.438) and three-pointers made per game (2.93). Clinton also tops the UM roster and ranks ninth in the league in scoring (16.8).

 

Maryland senior guard D.J. Strawberry leads the Terrapins in scoring (15.2) and ranks fifth in the ACC in steals per game (2.03).

 

Miami at the ACC Tournament

Miami is 1-2 in ACC Tournament games in the school’s two-year history at the championship tournament.

 

Last season, UM – the tournament’s No. 8 seed – downed ninth-seeded Clemson 66-63 in the opening round before falling to top-seeded Duke 80-76 in the quarterfinals.

 

In UM’s 2004-05 inaugural season in the ACC, the Hurricanes fell in the first round to Virginia, 66-65.
