Soccer Storms Past Lyola, 5-1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-After a two and a half-hour rain delay the University of Miami soccer team took the field to face Loyola College in Tallahassee, Fla. at the Seminole Soccer Tournament. The Hurricanes stormed past the Greyhounds 5-1 in the 2001 season opener.
“I am extremely excited, this is a great way to start the season,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “This was a great win against a quality team, we can use this match as a building block for the season.”
Sophomore Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) scored the first goal of the match at 28:03 on a pass from senior Deidre Bass (Coral Springs, Fla.). Miami took a 1-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
The Greyhounds were quick to answer back, scoring a goal four minutes and 10 seconds into the second half. Kelly Jones scored the unassisted goal at 49:08 tying the game one-all.
The Hurricanes dominated the second half, scoring four consecutive goals. Bass headed the game-winning goal on a long pass from junior Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, Fla.) at 57:27. LauraWest (Allen, Texas) scored back-to-back goals at 61:12 and 73:26. Matthews and Alexis MacKenzie (Plantation, Fla.) assisted the goals by West.
“Our team played very well tonight,” said Blankenship. “I saw some really great things from our players in this match.”
Newcomer Andrea Radice (Hialeah, Fla.) scored her first goal of her collegiate career at 89:38 on a pass from Mary Luke (Ft. Pierce, Fla.).
Junior Rachel Elsby (Boca Raton, Fla.) earns her first win in over a year, after sitting outlast season due to injury. Elsby made four saves in 90 minutes of action.
“(Rachel) Elsby played great in goal,” added Blankenship. “She had two huge saves right when the game was on the line.”
Miami concluded the match with 12 shots, including eight shots on goal, compared to nine shots, five on goal for the Greyhounds. UM and LC both took three corner kicks on the night.
The Hurricanes are back in action Sunday at Noon facing George Mason in the Seminole Soccer Tournament.
