CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Miami Hurricanes braved searing heat and wrapped up their fourth day of preseason workouts at the Greentree Practice Fields on the University of Miami campus on Monday afternoon.

The Hurricanes continued work on all phases of the kicking game, individual position drills and non-contact scrimmage situations during the afternoon practice. Head coach Larry Coker said he was extremely pleased with the progress of the wide receiver corps and the passing game as a whole. Coker again praised the work of the receivers, but his optimism related to his outlook about the entire team.

“I felt like we had another good day,” Coker said. “This football team is coming along pretty well. I’ve been very encouraged by what I’ve seen the last few days. If we had to start the season today, I would feel pretty good about this team. But, of course, we’ve got plenty of time between now and the Penn State game.”

On the injury front, first-team defensive end Jamaal Green sat out practice again on Monday while recovering from a twisted knee suffered on Saturday. Coker said Green may be cleared to return to action very soon, but is awaiting official confirmation.

The Hurricanes began the day early on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. practice at Greentree. The Hurricanes, who wrap up today’s work with two hours of meetings at the Hecht Athletics Center later this evening, resume two-a-days tomorrow with a pair of practices (8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.) at Greentree. Those practices, the first this fall in full pads, are open to the public. The team’s first scrimmage of the fall will take place during the afternoon practice on Wednesday, August 15, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Greentree.

Practices are open to the public through Wednesday. All workouts are closed to the public beginning Thursday, August 16, with regular media policies going into effect at that time.

The Hurricanes begin the 2001 season Saturday, September 1, at Penn State in a nationally televised contest (ABC Sports). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
