Charlottesville, VA. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team could not overcome a pair of goals in the first and second periods by No. 7 Virginia, falling to the Cavilers 4-0 in the ACC opener Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va.

The Hurricanes (0-2-0, 0-1-0 ACC) came up short against a strong Virginia (2-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) team, as the Cavilers were able to capitalize on an impressive offensive and defensive efforts, recording a total of eight shots on goal and 20 shots total while holding UM to just three shots.

UM goalkeeper Lauren McAdam turned in four saves against Virginia as teammates Lindsey Yach, Chelsea Garner and Lindsay Curtin each recorded shots, with Garner posting the only shot on goal against the Cavilers.

McAdam recorded two saves through the first 29 minutes as the Hurricanes held off a total of five shots by a strong Caviler offensive attack, keeping Virginia scoreless until the 29:16 mark when the Cavilers’ Shannon Foley connected on a one-timer from in front of the net to put Virginia up 1-0.

The Cavilers added the second goal of the afternoon in the 32nd minute on a one-timer by Sarah Curtis from six yards out, giving Virginia a 2-0 lead that would last throughout the remainder of the period.

Just one minute and 16 seconds into the second period, the Hurricanes suffered another setback as Virginia went up 3-0 when a shot deflected off a UM defender to bounce into corner of the Miami net.

Virginia scored the fourth and final goal of the afternoon in the 70th minute on a tap-in off the foot of Kelly Hammond to hand the Hurricanes the loss.

“Virginia was extremely organized and with their technical game and speed, they were able to create chances and made the best of those opportunities,” Head Coach Tricia Taliaferro said.

“Overall, I think we played well and going up against a quality ACC team like Virginia early on in the season is going help this team as we now know what to expect,” Taliaferro added.

The Hurricanes will return to action Friday, September 3, taking on ACC and intrastate rival Florida State at 7 p.m. in the home opener at Cobb Stadium. For ticket information please visit hurricanesports.com or call 1-800-GO-CANES.
