DURHAM, N.C. – After allowing a pair of first half goals, the University of Miami women’s soccer team could not rebound from a two-goal deficit to eventually fall to 10th-ranked Duke, 3-1, Friday night at Koskinen Stadium.

Junior midfielder Kelly Pflugner netted UM’s (8-10-1, 2-7-0 ACC) lone goal of the evening, scoring off a rebounded shot by junior defender Kristen Chapman in the 59th minute against Duke (12-4-1, 6-4-1 ACC).

The Blue Devils out-shot the Hurricanes by a total of 28-to-5 as UM sophomore keeper Lauren McAdam was credited with the loss despite recording seven saves on the night.

Duke struck first in the game’s 22nd minute when Carolyn Riggs scored from 11 yards out on the right side of the box. The Blue Devils recorded their second goal of the night – and eventual game-winner – just under 10 minutes later when Sarah McAbe scored off a cross from Lauren Tippets to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.

Miami found the back of the net just over 13 minutes into the second half when Pflugner footed a rebound on the Chapman header that hit the post and bounced back to cut the Duke lead to 2-1 at the 59th minute.

UM comeback would be cut short in the 76th minute as Duke’s Kate Seibert scored from nearly 18 yards out off a throw-in by Rachel-Rose Cohen to give the Blue Devils their third goal of the game.

Miami will return to action Sunday, traveling to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest in the 2005 regular-season finale at 10:30 a.m.
