Miami Volleyball Topples Clemson, 3-1

Clemson, S.C. – The University of Miami volleyball team got a match-high 21 kills from junior outside hitter Lane Carico to roll past homestanding Clemson University, 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-17, 25-21), on Friday night in Atlantic Coast Conference action inside Jervey Gymnasium.

With tonight’s victory, Miami (18-7, 8-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) picked up its second straight road win, and stayed its course in the current four-way tie for third place in the league standings.

With the match tied at one set apiece, UM used six attack errors by Clemson (14-11, 5-9 ACC) in the third frame, while the Hurricanes spread out kills with freshman Alexandria Johnson (4), Lane Carico (3) and junior middle blocker Ali Becker (3). The kills from UM, combined with errors by the Tigers, allowed the `Canes to collect the 25-17 set win.

In the fourth set, UM hit at a match set-high .415 percentage, striking for 19 kills and just two errors on 41 swings. In the frame, redshirt junior outside hitter Christine Williamson led the `Canes with a set-high six kills on 10 attacks. Carico staked five kills and six digs, while redshirt senior middle blocker Lici McGee placed four kills to help close the match with the 25-21 win.

UM established the pace early-on in the match, using eight kills in the opening set from Carico hitting at a .667 clip (8k-0e-12ta). Becker supplied four kills and a block in that frame, hitting .571 (4k-0e-7ta) in assisting UM in its 25-17 win. Clemson tied the match with a 25-20 victory in the second set, using the strength of Sandra Adeleye with a set-high eight kills and a block assist.

Clemson was led on the night by Adeleye with 20 kills and two assisted blocks. Behind her in double figures for kills was Serenat Yaz with 11, adding a match-high 31 digs in the process. Moneshia Simmons tallied 10 kills and two block assists for the Tigers. Setter Hannah Brenner put up a match-high 53 assists, and libero Cansu Ozdemir led the team defensively with 29 digs.

The Hurricanes used the strikes of Carico with a match-high 21 kills, giving the Manhattan Beach, Calif. native her fourth 20-plus kills match of the year – and her second consecutive. She added a team-high matching 22 digs to record her 20th double-double performance of the season – and her 10th consecutive.

Williamson continued her solid play of late with 15 kills, giving the Tampa-Plant High School product her fifth double-digit kills performance in the last seven matches. Setter Katie Gallagher handed out 50 assists to go along with 17 digs for her ninth double-double on the campaign. Freshman libero Ryan Shaffer matched Carico’s team-high 22 digs with 22 of her own. Fellow freshman Taylor Hollins added 13 digs and an assist as a defensive specialist.

Miami concludes its four-match road stretch tomorrow at Georgia Tech in Atlanta at 7 p.m. The last four times the `Canes and Yellow Jackets have met, the matches have gone to five sets. The `Canes have won three of the last four during that stretch, including a thrilling come-from-behind win last year in Atlanta, sparked by the play of Lici McGee.
