Alonzo Ties Shutout Record in 2-0 win Over Ole Miss

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s soccer team improved to 5-3-0 on the season with a 2-0 shutout win over the Ole Miss Rebels (5-2-0) on a record tying night at Cobb Stadium.
Sophomore keeper Vikki Alonzo tied the Hurricanes career mark of 14 shutouts in Friday night’s victory. The second-year starter matched Lauren McAdam’s record in only 30 games. The record would be hers outright but the Carrollton, Texas native shared time in net in a 3-0 shutout win over Florida Gulf Coast in August.
Alonzo was called on to make six saves on the evening, and as she made spectacular efforts look just average.
“I just try to stay focused and my team helps me out a lot,” said the always humble Alonzo. “I just think to myself, `You got this, you got this,’ and that helps me stay calm”
Offensively, her teammates helped her out, but so did Ole Miss.
The Hurricanes first goal of the night came when junior Barbara Blocker headed in a Megan Siebert corner in the 17th minute. The assist was the first collegiate point for Siebert in her freshman season. For the second time this season, Blocker soared above the defenders to head in a corner kick.
“Siebert had an awesome play into the face,” said Blocker. “We have really been working on our free kicks and corners in practice and trying to capitalize on those situations. I was in the right spot at the right time. I couldn’t have done it without Siebert.”
The `Canes were the beneficiary of an own goal in the 57th minute when Macdonald was awarded a free kick from 35 yards out. In an attempt to clear the ball away with her head, the Rebels’ Brittany King deflected it over the head of the keeper, giving Miami a 2-0 lead.
On paper, the match was evenly played with Miami holding a slight 12-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. But with the play of the defense and their trust in Alonzo, the end result was never in doubt.
Even though she didn’t score, junior Brittney Steinbruch fired three shot, all on goal on the night to lead her team.
