Soccer Defeats No. 20 Florida, 1-0

GAINESVILLE, Fla.-Deidre Bass scored the biggest goal of her career as she led the University of Miami soccer team to a 1-0 shutout over the No. 20-ranked Florida Gators Sunday afternoon at Percy Beard Stadium.
The Hurricanes improve to 5-0-0 on the season with its first-ever win over a ranked opponent and its first win over the Gators. The 5-0-0 start is the best ever for Miami. The five-time defending Southeastern Conference Champions fall to 2-2-0 on the season.
“This was a great win it speaks volumes about our team and the direction our program is going,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “I am so proud of the team, they did exactly what we asked of them and it paid off,” added Blankenship.
The Hurricanes took only two shots in the first half, compared to 12 for the Gators. Miami scored on the second shot of the half at 29:02 as senior Deidre Bass (Coral Springs, Fla.) scored the game winning. Juniors Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton) and Laura West (Allen, Texas) assisted her goal.
Miami came out the second half and defended the ball as the Gators took nine shots in the final 45 minutes.
Florida outshot Miami 21 to six, however four of Miami’s six shots where shots on goal. UF’s goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren made three saves and gave up one goal on the day.
Junior goalie Rachel Elsby (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a tremendous match, making seven saves in the shutout. Elsby leads Miami’s all-time career list with 10.5 shutouts in her career.
The Hurricanes play their second ranked opponent in three days facing No. 7 Florida State Wednesday night in Tallahassee, Fla.
