Miami Soccer Downs Samford, 2-1

Birmingham, Ala. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team downed Samford, 2-1, on Thursday evening at the 2007 Long’s Electronics Samford Classic to remain unbeaten in 2007. With the win, the Hurricanes improved to 2-0-1, while the Bulldogs dropped their first match of the season to fall to 2-1-0.
“I’m pleased with our ability to score,” said head Miami coach Tricia Taliaferro. “We’ve been working on this since the spring and we’re starting to get into a rhythm. Brittney [Steinbruch] and Sammy [Sanderson] were able to get some nice goals, and Brittney Macdonald also played very well.
“We still have some work we need to do. We need to clean up some things and become more consistent, but I’m pleased with our win tonight.”

With 11 goals already scored just three matches into the 2007 season, the Hurricanes are already halfway to their total offensive output in 2006 when they finished the season with 22 goals.
The Hurricanes jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the first half as freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) scored her team-high fifth goal of the season to extend her scoring streak to three-straight matches. Steinbruch nailed a shot past Samford goalkeeper Cayley Winters from five yards out for the unassisted score in the 16th minute – the first goal allowed by the Bulldogs this season.
Miami extended its lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute when junior Sammy Sanderson (Columbus, Ohio/LSU) took a pass from sophomore Beverly Goebel (Moreno Valley, Calif./Sacramento State) and fired a shot past Winters into the left corner of the net for the game winner. It marked Sanderson’s first goal of the 2007 campaign and the second assist by Goebel. For the half, the `Canes outshot the Bulldogs, 8-2, with four shots on goal compared to just one by the home team.
Samford got on the board with a goal in the 59th minute. Freshman Lauren Cook, the Bulldogs’ leading scorer this season, capitalized on a deflection by Miami’s senior goalkeeper Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) and sent the ball back into the net for Samford’s lone goal of the evening.
McAdam and the Hurricane defense fought off a last-minute offensive attack by the Bulldogs, who got off two shots in the waning moments of the game. For the game, Miami held the 19-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-6 margin in shots on goal.
In her first start of the season for the Hurricanes, McAdam registered five saves in 90 minutes. Winters made eight saves in 90 minutes for the Bulldogs.
Miami returns to action at the 2007 Long’s Electronics Samford Classic on Sat., Sept. 8, with a 6 p.m. match versus LSU (3-0). It marks the first time UM’s Sanderson will face her former teammates on the pitch. As a freshman in 2005, Sanderson played in 17 games for the Tigers, scoring one goal and recording two assists. LSU won its third straight of the season with a 7-2 rout of Memphis earlier tonight in the opening game of the tournament.
