JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team used a trio of goals in the second period by senior Anik Huffman, junior Lindsey Yach and senior Britney Butcher to down in-state rival Jacksonville, 3-1 Tuesday afternoon in Jacksonville, Fla., claiming their second win in as many matches.

Playing in their third game in six days, the Hurricanes (2-4-0) overpowered the Dolphins (1-5-1), recording 20 shots by 14 different players on the afternoon, including a season-best 10 on goal, while holding JU to just nine shots in the match.

The first period opened as the two schools fought for more than nine minutes before the first shot was taken when the Hurricanes’ Sheuneen Ta missed wide from the right side of the net at the 9:48 mark.

Miami and Jacksonville traded five more shot each throughout the remainder of the half as the first period closed with the match scoreless.

The Hurricanes came out strong in the second period when, following a blocked shot attempt by Yach in the 48th minute, Jyene Mack and Lauren Berardicurti found Huffman, who netted a goal from inside the box at the 50:40 mark to score her first of the season giving Miami a 1-0 lead.

Yach would connect nearly 22 minutes later, adding to the Miami in the 73rd minute with her second goal of the season on a penalty kick.

Miami’s third and final goal followed shortly as Butcher lobbed a shot off the crossbar and right post to score her first goal of the season in the 76th minute.

The Dolphins lone goal of the night came in 79th minute on a penalty kick by Jess Newport past UM keeper Alex Alford.

“This was a nice win that should build our confidence and end some of the frustration we’ve had early on,” head coach Tricia Taliaferro said. “It was nice to see us finish on the chances we’ve been working so hard to create.”

“I really thought playing in three matches in six days would be both physically and mentally challenging, but we were able to focus and that is what impressed me the most as we were able to tough it out and get this win,” Taliaferro added.

Miami will take nearly a week off before hosting ACC and in-state rival, Florida State Monday, September 27 at 7 p.m. For ticket information please call 1-800-GO-CANES or visit hurricanesports.com.
