Romberg Named To Rimington Trophy Watch List

Aug. 31, 2001

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Junior center Brett Romberg of the University of Miami is one of 21 players on the “watch list” for the 2001 Dave Rimington Trophy honoring the best offensive center in college football, the Boomer Esiason Foundation has announced.

Romberg, a 6-3, 293-pound junior from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, has been a key contributor in an offensive line that has not allowed a quarterback sack this season and has allowed just three sacks in 340 passing plays during the 2000 season. Romberg, a first-team All-BIG EAST selection by The Sporting News in 2000, was listed as the nation’s No. 10 center by The Sporting News in it preseason magazine for 2001. One of a trio of Canadians playing offensive line for the Hurricanes, Romberg was a left guard during his first two seasons at Miami (1998-1999) before becoming a center prior to the 2000 campaign.

The Rimington Trophy is named for Dave Rimington, a former two-time consensus All-America center for the University of Nebraska and the only player in college football history to earn two Outland Trophies. The Rimington Trophy was established in 2000 and is sponsored by the Esiason Foundation. Dominic Raiola of Nebraska earned the inaugural Rimington Trophy in 2000. The 2001 Rimington Trophy will be presented December 15 in a banquet at Lincoln, Nebraska.
