CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team surrendered a game-winning goal to ACC rival, NC State in the 37th minute of the first period to fall to the Wolfpack 1-0 in the Hurricanes’ home conference opener Friday night in front of a crowd of 445 at Cobb Stadium.

Miami (0-4-0, 0-2-0 ACC) out-shot the Wolfpack (6-0-1, 1-0-0 ACC) 16-12 despite playing a man down for nearly 42 minutes in the second period when keeper Alex Alford, playing in her first match of the season, drew a red card in the 48th minute after colliding with an NC State player.

Eleven UM players recorded shots against the Wolfpack, including Lindsey Yach, who led the Hurricanes with a pair of shots on goal.

The Hurricanes’ Lauren McAdam registered four saves in net for UM, but shouldered the loss when NC State’s Anna Helenius footed an assist by teammates Erin Griswold and Alex Caram into the left of the net just out of reach of the diving Hurricane keeper at the 36:43 mark of the first period.

The Wolfpack held on to the lead throughout the remainder of the period and match to hand UM its fourth loss of the season.

“It’s always difficult to lose such a close match,” head coach Tricia Taliaferro said, “but if we had to take something positive from this match, I would have to say that I was extremely impressed with the way our team responded being a man down for nearly the entire second period.”

“I really feel that if we would have been at even strength, things would have been different, but I seeing our team play with the drive and determination they had tonight was something we haven’t seen up to this point and that is something we are going to be able to build upon as we move forward,” Taliaferro added.

The Hurricanes return to Cobb Stadium Sunday, hosting ACC rival Maryland at 1 p.m. Sunday’s match with the Terrapins is Junior Canes Day as all Junior Canes receive free admission with voucher.
