Buchanon Names Tatupu Award Semifinalist

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami cornerback/punt return man Phillip Buchanon has been named a semifinalist for the 2001 Mosi Tatupu Special Teams Player of the Year Award, as announced this week by the Hula Bowl Maui and the Maui Quarterback Club.
Buchanon has been a major factor in the top-ranked Hurricanes’ success this season, his first as Miami’s primary punt return specialist. Buchanon is averaging 16.7 yards per punt return this season to rank second nationally in NCAA Division 1A. Buchanon has scored two touchdowns this season via punt returns and another via interception return.
The winner of the award will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, which will air on ESPN starting at 9 p.m.
The winner of the award will be invited to Hawai’i to play in the 2002 Hula Bowl Maui All-Star Football Classic. The Hula Bowl Maui will kickoff at 8 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 and will be played at the newly renovated War Memorial Stadium.
