Women's Basketball Beats VT In Overtime

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Shaquana Wilkins (Plymouth, Fla.) scored 19 points to lead the Miami women’s basketball team a 67-66 overtime victory over visiting Virginia Tech Tuesday night.

The Hurricanes earn their first win the Convocation Center improving to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the BIG EAST. Virginia Tech drops to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in conference.

Carrie Mason hit a three-pointer with 25 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game 54-54. Tamara James (Dania, Fla.) missed the front end of a one-and-one with seven seconds in the game, Ieva Kublina grabbed the rebound but time expired sending the game into overtime.

Miami led by five points (66-61) with two minutes left in overtime as Meghan Saake (Wellington, Fla.) stole the ball and converted on a three-point play.

The Hokies scored five points to cut Miami’s lead to one-point with just under a minute remaining.

Miami missed four-of-four from the free throw line in the remaining seconds of the game but kept the Hokies from scoring on a blocked shot by Saake and a steal by Chanivia Broussard (Miami, Fla.) to end the game with the one-point advantage.

The Hurricanes broke a tie with the Hokies for third place in the BIG EAST.

Yalonda McCormick (Miami, Fla.) recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 assists.

Miami was up 22-18 at halftime with both teams shooting a dismal 25 percent from the floor.

The Hurricanes shot 67 percent from the field in overtime compared to 42 percent for the Hokies.

Broussard scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while James scored 13 on the night.

Mason led all scorers with 24 points.

The Hurricanes host No. 20 Villanova Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
